How the Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Occurred
According to a report by the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, vinyl chloride, benzene, and other harmful chemicals began contaminating the water supply at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, in the early 1950s. The sources of the water contamination include an off-base dry cleaning service, leaking underground water storage tanks, industrial spills, and waste disposal sites.
For decades, Marines and their families drank and bathed in water contaminated with up to 3,400 times the allowable amount of these chemicals. Affected housing areas included Tarawa Terrace, Midway Park, Berkeley Manor, Paradise Point, Hadnot Point, Hospital Point, and Watkins Village.
