According to a new report by ProPublica, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved an ingredient for boat fuel that can cause cancer in virtually every person exposed to it over the course of a lifetime.

The chemical is made from recycled plastic and will be manufactured by Chevron in Pascagoula, Mississippi. EPA documents show that it has a lifetime cancer risk one million times higher than what the agency usually finds acceptable.

Though the substance is capable of polluting both air and water, the EPA only recommends that people handling it make sure to wear gloves.

The Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Environmental Defense Fund, and several other organizations have accused the EPA of failing to protect people from the dangers posed by this and other fuel-related chemicals.
